7 hours per week. Saturday or Sunday may be required for occasional events. Fixed term until end of December 2018.

Job Purpose:


o      To assist the Families and Education Coordinator by planning, preparing and leading our Garden Explorers Sessions every Friday Morning.

o      To creatively plan and help make resources for the sessions.

o      To help occasionally at families or educational events.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:


1.            Communication and Relationship Skills

           a)      Deliver a group for families and young children that are creative and fun.

           b)     Able to co-ordinate support from the Quay Place volunteers.

2.            Knowledge, Training and Experience

a)     Provide an outdoor experience for children that promotes wellbeing and learning through play.

b)     DBS checked and First Aid qualification.       


3.            Planning and Organisational Skills

a)        Plan and run our Garden Explorers activities at Quay Place with attention to detail. Ensure that all risk assessments have been conducted with everything in place to ensure that young people enjoy visiting Quay Place and are safe whilst doing so.

b)        Keep Resources well organised.

4.            Emotional Effort

a)        Listen and offer signposting and advice to people who may be taking part in your group.

b)        Participate in the Suffolk Mind model of emotional wellbeing – Emotional Needs Audit (ENA). Training is provided 

5.            Freedom to Act

a)        The post holder will work independently on the agreed objectives as part of the Quay Place team – reporting progress regularly. Advice is available when required.

6.            Responsibility

a)      Client Care - no direct personal client care

7.            Policy and Service Development Implementation

a)        Develop and review activities ensuring they are enjoyable and people feel engaged.

b)        Complete risk assessments for all activities.

c)        Provide feedback weekly to the Families and Education Coordinator

8.            Financial and Physical Resources

a)        To keep resources well stocked and ensure anything needed ordering is requested in advance of when needed.


9.            Human Resource Management

a)        To ensure volunteers are aware of what is needed doing and provide support and encouragement during Garden Explorers.

Flexibility Clause:

to relinquish and/or undertake further appropriate responsibilities as may be necessary for the effective implementation of Suffolk Mind’s Vision and Mission and to adhere to the policies & procedures under the overall remit of this job description. As this is a developing post with in a developing organisation it is expected that the post holder will be prepared

Excellent communication skills with an ability to empathise with people from all walks of life and outlooks.

Experience of working with families or young children.

Comfortable to run groups and set clear boundaries.

Able to sing nursery rhymes with families and children.

A flexible team player.

Ability to make links with other members of the community and enhance sessions.

Confident reading stories aloud to children.



Ability to think creatively to develop interesting activities for each session.

An ability to make things ‘FUN’ and bring energy to activities.

Experience of running groups.

Knowledge of Learning through Play.

Knowledge of Wellbeing and Heritage.

Understanding of Child development.




Excellent organisation skills.

Ability to plan ahead to know resources are prepared in advance of each session.

Understands the principles of good volunteer management.

Creative – able to reuse, recycle and invent games.


Comfortable to talk to people from all different walks of life.

To offer signposting to anyone needing support.



Be confident to deliver activities and groups to families and young people at QP to agreed plan and within agreed resources



Be happy to work independently and within a team.

Know when to ask for advice and support

Keeping activities appropriate to the age of the children attending.

Keeping people safe.
